Polar Bear Plunge

Who says you can’t jump in the Chesapeake Bay just because it’s cold outside? You sure can. You just need to sign up for the 2019 MSP Polar Bear Plunge, and you’ll get to jump into the icy bay with others. You’ll also enjoy music, activities, food, drinks, and entertainment. This year’s plunge will be at Sandy Point Park on Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and registration is $75. Proceeds will go to the Maryland State Police, so this is all for a great cause.

Is this going to be your first time taking the plunge? Here are some tips to follow so you’ll be ready to brave the ice.

Take a Cold Shower to Get Your Body Ready

You are going to experience a different kind of cold when you jump into the bay. It’s a good idea to get your body ready by preparing at home. Turn the shower on as cold as it will go, and stand under the water for a full 30 seconds. Do this every day leading up to the plunge.

Wear Shoes

You are likely going to step on some rocks when you jump in the bay. That’ll hurt if you’re in your bare feet, so put on some water shoes. The shoes will also help your feet stay warm after the event.

Bring a Towel

There will be towels as the Polar Plunge, but they are likely going to be pretty small. You’ll prefer drying off with your own towel from home. Go with something large and fluffy so you can maximize the warmth.

Bring a Change of Clothes

You want to enjoy the after party, but that’ll be hard to do if you’re in your swim attire all day. Bring a dry change of clothes so you can get out of your bathing suit as soon as you come out of the water. You’ll be relieved to get some winter clothes on.

Move in the Water

Don’t just stand there after you take the plunge. That will make you feel even colder. Move in the water to stay warm, and don’t linger very long. When you see others get out of the water, follow them.

Here’s an extra tip. Reward yourself for a job well done with a new vehicle. It takes some guts to do the Polar Plunge, so a new Alfa Romeo is in order. Visit us at Safford Alfa Romeo of Tyson’s Corner in Vienna, Virginia, and we will help you pick out your dream car.
