Learn About Outer Space At The Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum

Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum

If museums are your hobby, then Washington D.C. can be a bit of a whirlwind. The nation’s capital features over 70 different museums dedicated to art, history, science, and more. Of course, it’s tough to hit them all in one trip. So if you’re in the D.C. area – and short on time – then you have to make the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum a priority. Take a walk through time and learn about America’s remarkable – though sometimes turbulent – journey to the stars.

The Air and Space Museum is located at Independence Ave at 6th Street in D.C. It’s open every day except December 25 from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm and admission is free. Read on for some details about everything there is to do and then make your plans to visit!

Exhibitions

There are currently 30 different exhibitions inside the Air and Space Museum. Each one covers an important milestone in our nation’s (as well as the world’s) history of flight and space travel. Get an up-close look at the moon landing with the Destination Moon exhibit (which features a display of the actual Apollo 11 command console), or learn all about the science of space travel by touring the Space Science exhibit. You can also check out different exhibits dedicated to commercial and wartime aviation, rockets and missiles, and even balloon travel.

Collections

The Air and Space Museum is renowned for its massive collection of more than 60,000 air and space objects, documents, historic photographs, and more. Some of the featured items on display include:

  • The Boeing FB-5 Hawk
  • The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover
  • Lunar Model LM-2
  • Sidewinder Missle
  • Spad XVI Reconnaissance Plane
  • A moon rock

To see everything on display, search the museum’s online database before your trip and make a list of your “must see” items.
