The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale offers a unique plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a turbocharged 1.3-liter MultiAir Firefly 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor. Together, they produce 285 horsepower and deliver an estimated 32 miles of all-electric range. This setup is complemented by a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. On the road, the Tonale’s acceleration is impressive, reaching 60 mph in approximately 5.5 seconds. Road bumps and noise are severely reduced, thanks to the Tonale’s independent MacPherson suspension with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology.

In contrast, the BMW X1 provides a choice of two powertrains. The entry-level xDrive28i features a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 241 horsepower, while the performance-oriented M35i boasts a 312-horsepower tune of the same engine. Both configurations come with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The M35i’s acceleration is brisk, achieving 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. More sporty than luxurious, the X1 is praised for its agile handling and well-tuned suspension, though the ride can be especially harsh in the M35i model.

It benefits from a 15.5-kWh battery pack, which charges in about 2.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet. This makes it a practical choice for those looking to minimize fuel consumption during daily commutes.

The BMW X1, while not as efficient as the Tonale, provides adequate fuel economy figures. The xDrive28i is EPA-rated at 28 MPG combined, 25 MPG city, and 34 MPG highway, whereas the thirstier M35i achieves 26 MPG combined, 23 MPG city, and 31 MPG highway.

Inside, the Alfa Romeo Tonale features a cabin that reflects its Italian heritage, with a design inspired by the Giulia and Stelvio.
