You’ll Fall Head Over Heels For Great Falls Park

Just a few miles north of Vienna, you’ll find a beautiful cascading river, and once you hear the rushing waters of Great Falls, you might feel that you’re worlds away. If you’d like to get out and take in some natural scenery, plan a quick trip up to Great Falls Park.

The park itself covers acres of natural beauty, from the river and woodlands to the rapid waterfalls. As the Potomac River narrows, it rushes with great force through tiers of rock, creating an array of waterfalls and churning whitewater. As you approach, you can hear the roar of the rushing currents, and the river courses through with incredible power as it’s focused by Mather Gorge, the narrowest point of the Potomac.

Getting the Right View

There are three prime vantage points where you can get a great view of the falls. The first overlook is to the left of the visitor center, and it offers the closest view of the falls. A quick, accessible trail leads to the second overlook, which is further back from the falls to provide a more panoramic view. The third overlook features a couple of viewing platforms as well as a high-water mark pole, which indicates how high floodwaters have climbed when the river runs over its banks.

Enjoying the Scenery

In addition to the beautiful cascades, there’s much more to see across the 800-acre park. If you’re ready for a walk, you can explore 15 miles of hiking trails, while a portion of these trails are also shared for biking and horseback riding. The trails offer a range of experiences from casual outings to more challenging treks, so remember to bring water with you on any route you take. If you feel like casting a line, you can bring a rod and reel to enjoy the park’s fishing as well. You’re also welcome to climb at the park, as certain spots have become popular attractions for avid climbers.
