Check Out George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Mount VernonGeorge Washington’s Mount Vernon was just named on the “12 of America’s Best Historic Homes to Visit” list by Architectural Digest, so you don’t want to miss out while you are in Washington, DC. The 18th-century home, with its lush gardens, museum galleries, restaurants, and shops make for a full day’s visit.

There are some pretty neat historic trade demonstrations and interactive programs for all ages also. AND the 45-minute sightseeing cruise down the Potomac River at the wharf on the property is pretty neat to do if you are there in the summer months. Every day, there are a variety of new tours and happenings around the estate.

George and Martha Washington’s plantation home was originally built by the president’s father in 1734. Washington expanded the house into a 21-room mansion from a one-and-a-half-story house beginning in 1754. The beautiful buildings on the Mount Vernon property have been restored or rebuilt and the museum showcases artifacts from Washington’s life and presidency. The farm with its animals and the fully-functioning gristmill and whiskey distillery are a must-see too.

In 1860, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association took over the estate and continued to renovate and maintain this legacy of George Washington, our first president of the United States and a general in the Revolutionary War. Memberships are available and the locals take advantage of an ongoing schedule of really fun planned events. The estate relies on private contributions and does not accept government funding.

Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $12 for children under 12 years old. Parking is free. The estate is open every day from 9 AM – 5 PM and located at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon, Virginia 22121. For more information, please call (703) 780-2000 or email tickets@mountvernon.org.
