The oil in your engine is essential to safe and reliable performance. If you ever need to know what condition it’s in, follow these easy steps.

The Basics

While some new models now come with an electronic monitor instead of a dipstick, it’s still very likely that you have to check your oil the old-fashioned way. Fortunately, that’s very easy to do. You’ll just need a rag or paper towel for a quick and simple visual inspection. Of course, you can also keep your owner’s manual handy if you have any questions about your specific model. Before you check under the hood, make sure your engine is off and cool. You should also try to park the vehicle as level as possible to get an accurate gauge of your remaining oil.

Visual Inspection

When your engine is ready for an oil check, lift up the hood and look for the oil cap. It should be labeled with either the word “oil” or an icon of an old-fashioned oil lamp with a handle and spout. Turn the cap, then pull out the dipstick, which should have some oil on it. You’ll need to wipe this oil off with your cloth, insert the dipstick back into the oil, then pull it up again. The dipstick should have some indicators of the adequate oil level, often either “High” and “Low,” lines across the stick, or “Min” and Max.”  if the oil level is below the markings, you’ll need to add more. You should also inspect the color of the oil. If it’s dark, it should be fine, but if it’s cloudy, it might be contaminated and in need of a change.

Why are Oil Changes So Important?

Your engine needs clean oil for a variety of reasons. Oil is vital to protecting all its moving parts from wear and tear, and it also guards against overheating and the buildup of contaminants and debris. If you go too long without an oil change, the oil will get dirty and far less effective, leaving your engine prone to damage. That’s why it’s best to get your oil change on a regular basis, and you can avoid more costly repairs by relying on this efficient, affordable service.
